When I was growing up in England we had a saying
"10 crows are rooks and 2 rooks are crows". I used to apply the same
reasoning to Australian Ravens and Little Ravens. However during my reign
as GBS Coordinator I noticed that there was an a small but definitely increasing
number of observations of flocks of 20+ Australian Ravens. I followed this
up with the observers of such flocks in year 23 and they were quite convinced
that they had not seen Little Ravens on those occasions.
Much as I hate to disagree with wise young (from my
perspective) birders such as McComas on that basis I think it is best not to
rely on flock size as distinguishing these two species. Voice is
still a give-away as are the hackles if you're close enough to
see them or their absence. (I'm not sure if you can see an
absence.)
