I took Friday off work and went wandering along the old railway line from Hume to Melrose.
I couldnt find any further sign of the White-fronted Chat reported by Rod. The Dusky Woodswallows seemed to have moved on as well.
At the Tralee Railway Reserve I watched a very vocal male Mistletoebird. June seems pretty late for this species. Further along in a bracken-lined gully I found a pair of Eastern Yellow Robins among others.
Further still I flushed a lone quail from a regenerating area along the railway line some 100m from the Monaro Hwy. This area was burnt 2 years ago but is coming back nicely. The bird was among nice new green shoots of grass, but flew across the track into rocky ground with tussock grass. The habitat pointed to button-quail but the bird was obviously a quail (my guess either a female Stubble from the red eye, crown stripes and upright stance, or a very dull colured Brown). I expected it to fly into the neighbouring grassy paddock but instead it eventually flew further up and into the rocky unburnt eucalypt forest.
Cheers
