Identifying skylarks from pipits.
Easiest thing is skylarks have a crest, pipits don't.
Pipits have a white/buff throat with a clearly defined edge. Skylarks is pale
but not defined.
Pipits wag their tail up and down, which is useful when looking from behind.
Less obvious 'Jizz' type features are
Pipits appear to have a noticeably long pointy beak, skylarks have a more finch
like beak. Pipits have a noticeably long tail. Pipits appear to have long legs.
Skylarks seem rounder and chunkier.
Pipits seem to spend more time on ground. Often flying a short distance (often
spread tails) when disturbed, they keep out of your reach, but are still
observable, Skylarks tend to hide in grass. Skylarks will sit for ages on fence
posts. Pipits will for a while but tend to fly to ground.
Skylarks fly straight up, very high when doing display flight. Pipits flight is
more undulating and usually lower.
Voice is totally different, although they shouldn't be calling now. Skylarks
are a constant high pitched trilling when displaying. Pipits are a harsher
sweeerrrr. Pipits have a 2 or 3 note contact call, I don't think skylarks do.
Skylarks tend to be in non native grass, phalaris for eg. Pipits are more
likely to be in native tussock grass. This varies.
Pipits are native, skylarks are introduced. I doubt you can use this feature to
ID in the field though. Heh heh
Otherwise they are very similar.
