Wonderful weather for camping at Richard Allen's banding site at Weddins,
and thoroughly enjoyed by a turn-up of some 17 souls, with varying degrees
of interest in the activity. Less cheerful than the banding party were the
surrounding paddocks, very seared and bleak. However, the timbered country
adjoining the NP had a large number of species, even if they were just
seeking refuge. Richard had earlier mentioned the recent absence of the
Yellow-tufted Honeyeaters, but they were among the most evident honeyeaters,
several parties using the last blossom in the ironbarks and mistletoe.
Other unexpected catches were a possibly overwintering Rufous Whistler and a
fine male Flame Robin - the first for the site in 18 years. Among this
gang, the traditional game of 'guess the species' takes many forms of which
the illustration shows but one example.
