Trying to find a Powerful Owl isnt that difficult after all...if you pick the right location. I knew Tallaganda was a good location for this species so headed that way on Sunday.
Stopping at several places on the way: Yanununbeyan State Conservation Area (Woolcara Trail), Yanununbeyan National Park (Groses South Trail), Forbes Creek and Hoskinstown.

I saw the Powerful Owl at around 6pm near the Rossi-Lowden Rd along Yandyguinula Creek (I think I spelled that correctly). I left soon after that as no possums would undoubtedly show themselves with this predator lurking nearby. Barbara, a record sheet will follow.

Other birds seen included a confiding Bassian Thrush, a Fan-tailed Cuckoo and a Spotted Quail-thrush at South Black Range, a male Flame Robin along Mulloon Creek and several Flame Robins near Hoskinstown (this species seems to still be present in wet forest at high altitudes as well as already found much lower in the grassy valleys), and 4 Diamond Firetails near Hoskinstown.

From Woolcara Lane in Yanununbeyan SCA I could reach the Queanbeyan River which cuts a steep gorge below Corner Hill. Its just a 10-15 minute hike across several dry creek gullies to get there. However the river even here is choked with willows and other weeds and is lined with tall tea-tree blocking any view of the water. I did hear a Grey Butcherbird.

Cheers
Marnix
