Hello!

My name is Judith Scarl and I'm a PhD student in the
United States (at Cornell University in Ithaca, New
York). As part of my PhD I am studying the vocal and
mating behaviours of galahs in Canberra. (I am a
Visiting Fellow at the ANU; Rob Magrath is my
sponsor.) I contacted COG last year when I was looking
at potential field sites, and the group was very
helpful, so I thought I'd try again in relation to
field assistants!

Last year, I advertised locally (in Canberra) for
assistants and got very few responses; unfortunately I
cannot pay my assistants and not many Australians want
to study galahs for no pay! I thought I'd try again
this year, though!

Would COG be able to send out my advertisement for
field assistants, or do you know of any animal
behaviour job lists in Oz that I could advertise on?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, I'm
attaching a copy of my ad.

Thank you so much!

Cheers,
Judith

Attached advertisement:
Field assistant volunteers (2) needed from early
August to 20 December 2005 (dates somewhat flexible;
will possibly consider hiring someone from
approximately 1 Aug to 10 October or 10 October to 20
December) to assist an American Ph.D. student on a
project involving acoustic communication and mate
choice in galahs. (Really! Galahs! I know they?re
everywhere, but they?re quite interesting!) Duties
may include trapping and handling of large parrots,
audio- and video-recording, nest monitoring, radio
telemetry, possible tree climbing, resighting and
behavioral observations, acoustic analyses, and data
entry. Field experience, bird handling experience,
experience with acoustics research/software, and
radio-tracking experience preferred, but not required.
This project is conducted in the northern suburbs of
Canberra. This position will offer a great chance to
gain experience in acoustic research and handling
large parrots. Assistant must be willing to work long
hours and 6 days/week, must be able to sit quietly and
observe for long periods of time (sometimes without
anything happening!) To apply, please send a cover
letter, CV, and the names and contact details of four
references (three academic, one personal) to Judith
Scarl at as soon as possible, and no
later than 30 May 2005. Feel free to email or call +1
(607) 254 2131 or +1 (607) 351 4115 for further information.
