Continuous presence of a species does not preclude the possibility of
seasonal migration. Migration may occur 'over the top' of a resident
population. For example this is probably what happens in the case of
Little Eagle and Brown Goshawk locally. One set of individuals may
also be replaced from another population as they leave an area. The
well known example of this is the seasonal redistribution of Common
Blackbird in Europe. In the UK some Blackbirds remain for the
winter, some leave and others arrive. I think that the Eurasian
Starling presents a similar story
This leads me to ponder once again what happens to Common Blackbirds
in Canberra at this time of year. They always seem very scarce but
then explode back onto the scene in mid winter. Are there any
banding data that might address this?
