While early-rising COG members were counting honeyeaters migrating across
the Murrumbidgee, I went about 70 kms further east to the upper Shoalhaven
area.
By contrast to the Compstons' experience on Friday, at 11.30 on Sunday
there were no migrating honeyeaters at Jerrabattgulla Creek. It was sunny,
around 25 degrees, with a gentle breeze,
By noon, an occasional 3-4 were arriving among the small eucalypts on the
crest to the east. At 1300 hrs groups of 10 - 20 Yellow-faced followed the
crest (pasture on both sides) flying low through the tree tops, a few
making short stops. Direction ESE.
At 1330 hrs all activity stopped. About 450 birds had gone through in 30
mins. The wind had picked up a little, so had the temperature. Plenty of
small ground birds in the next hour, plus 15 Sitellas, but no more HEs,
apart from the locals.
