Looking at Martin Butterfield's Pied Cormorants yesterday (roosting on the well-veged little island west of the carillon), I noticed that there were 2 sets of obviously paired birds. Moreover the 'bare parts' were very bright, and they were engaging in the excited-looking recognition behaviour that HANZAB labels 'Gargling' and 'Pointing'. You can see this with binos, but the situation is better suited to a chair and a scope.
