I am convinced that I saw a Scaly breasted Lorikeet in Curtin on Saturday night on the corner of Morgan Place and Morgan Cres. So why has it taken me so long to report…

I was visiting friends (inside and sans bins) when I saw a lori fly into a tree. From inside I saw a green bird with ‘colour’ and I thought Rainbow Lori. I went outside and saw a green bird (no sign of colour) with a reddish bill in a eucalypt, and without bins it was just too far away to see any ‘scales’ or other identifying features that may have alerted me to Scaly-Breasted Lorikeet. It flew across the road and I could see the outer tail feathers were yellowish.

My Canberra bird brain firmly out of gear since returning from the coast, the lack of colour in the head made me think no more than ‘escaped parrot’ until I was having a look through field guides last night. The colour I had observed must have been under the wings.

Cheers and apologies

Alastair

Subject: [canberrabirds] little lorikeets

After just returning from 8 days in Mollymook I spent yesterday afternoon wandering around Hackett and the adjacent Majura Reserve in the rain. There are a lot of eucalypts in flower along Antill St, but I didint see or hear any lorikeets there. I then wandered to the reservoir behind Rivett St and finally heard the calls of little lorikeets. A flock of 9 birds flew low overhead heading in a northerly direction towards Goorooyarroo, flying approximately parallel to Mt Majura, calling constantly. At the rate they were flying it didnt look like they were returning. I didnt find any other lorikeets after that.

Cheers
Marnix
