I couldn't resist Steve's message, as B-b R is one of those anomalies that
have consistenly evaded me in the ACT, despite the well-meaning (?!) folk
who assure me that they're abundant and easy. Needless to say, no rails
appeared (other than the Eternal Three), though I can raise Steve's pelican
count to 16. Yesterday morning's Freckled Duck was not in evidence either;
another goner since then seemed to be the Great Egret.
On 2004 highlights; since I used to ask for them, I suppose I'd better
respond now.
For the ACT, it would have to be the moment on my first visit to Bibaringa
when, while delighting in my first ACT Peaceful Doves I had the familiar
feeling - I was seeing what I expected to see, rather than what was really
there. On this occasion though it was All Good - I was actually seeing
Diamond Doves.
Nationally, maybe the lovely Lewin's Rail, as a lifer in C'wealth Park, of
all unlikely places (and in the sleet!)? (My only newie for the year, other
than a feral which I'm not admitting to, and which I wouldn't mention now if
not for witnesses.) I think I'd go though for the dead tree in windy and
still droughted Welford NP in SWQ, with a mixed flock of 20-30 Pied and
Black HEs.
Happy birding all, though I feel somewhat guilty, as I did after the fires,
to be indulging in something so frivolous and enjoyable in such dark times.
