I went to Griffith last weekend for a couple of days. The locusts were quite bad around Temora and Ardlethan (Stockinbingal was probably the closest they were to here). Probably the worst plague I've seen in the area in 25 years. Had to stop several times to clean the windscreen. The car was a mess when we finally got home, however the Magpie-larks and Indian Mynas picked off most of the bodies, and two thunderstorms had a good scouring effect.

If you're travelling out that way, make sure your radiator doesn't get clogged with them, because your car can overheat quickly. Most vehicles in the area have a piece of shadecloth or similar material over the grill to stop locusts getting stuck in the radiator. Maybe even carry a squeegee and some detergent for the windscreen.

Cheers
Anthony

Subject: [canberrabirds] Fw: [BIRDING-AUS] locust swarms

This comes from the debate on birding-aus about locusts.  There was an article in the C Times last week about a swarm heading towards Canberra.  My guess would be that if it does get close the ACT Government's most likely reaction will be to start spraying.

Later items in the thread discuss whether the sprays are toxic to birds (no clear answer was given) and express different views about how much consultation has been involved in other areas affected by the current plague.
