A few months ago I asked for and received reams of useful advice about birding
in Singapore. I was travelling with my husband [who likes to bird but doesn’t
like getting up early!] and my adult middle son who has autism & epilepsy, so
we probably cover a bit less ground than some!
We got home last week after 9 very enjoyable days in Singapore [although it is
a shock to go outside at 5:30 am and walk into what feels like a wall of hot
moist air ] & the tendency for binoculars and camera to fog up can be
frustrating. We did go out for a day with Lim Kim Seng and that was very
worthwhile as it is most unlikely we would have been standing on the top of the
Jelutong Tower as the sun rose otherwise! It was a great help to be able to
know what was twittering in the trees and undergrowth and to be taken to the
correct tree to see the Spotted Wood Owls [joy ].
We stayed at Changi to facilitate trips to Pulau Ubin & Pasir Ris Park & then
next to the Singapore Botanic Gardens. As well we visited Central Catchment
Nature Reserve, Butik Batok, Kranji Marsh, Gardens By the Bay, Sungei Buloh,
Japanese & Chinese Gardens, as well as the Zoo & Jurong Bird Parks & Sentosa
Island, seeing about 100 identifiable birds for our trip. Most memorable birds
include the Oriental Pied-Hornbill, Spotted Wood-Owl, Stork-billed Kingfisher,
White-throated Kingfisher, Blue-throated Bee-eater, Banded Woodpecker, Lineated
Barbet, Black-naped Oriole, Greater Racket-tailed Drongo, Straw-headed Bulbul,
Asian Fairy-bluebird and White-crested Laughingthrush
Thanks again to everybody who offered advice and instructions, the birding was
lovely, taxis cheap and food delicious.
