Hi Jonny, well done at last. I was thinking of nipping over to Perth myself (
from Adelaide) after getting home from Cairns( where the heat and humidity was
impossible, as were the mozzies, yuk). When I saw the weather forecast for
Perth I changed my mind and didn't go. Cairns was bad enough - even the locals
were complaining - but 42 right now is not on my agenda.

Hi Ross,

your posting made me go to see the Crested/Oriental Honey Buzzard, finally.
Thank you for the stimulus. I am a hopeless twitcher - I believe the bird had
been there since late last year, and the location is just about half an hour’s
drive from my place.

I went to the Recreation Centre, as instructed, and after only 10 minutes heard
a distant single note of a Little Eagle, i.e. from quite high up, and soaring
with it was the Honey Buzzard, which was slightly larger, with greater wingspan
than the Little Eagle. Nevertheless the Little Eagle mobbed occasionally the
Honey Buzzard, but both birds did not take it seriously.

Date: Monday, 8th of Feb.
Observation time: 11:35–11:45 am.
Temperature was around 40˚C, with a top of 42˚C on that day.

Happy birding,
Jonny

Hi Sue,

Not sure if anyone has got back to you yet but the CHB was spotted this morning
at Lake Joondalup.

Best viewing is usually from next to (northern side) the Recreation Centre (on
Scenic Drive, east side of lake).

You might also be interested to hear that a Eurasian Hobby was seen yesterday
and this morning at South Lake (northern corner of reserve on North Lake Rd)
which is about 20 mins south of the Airport.

Cheers,
Ross

I will be briefly in Perth next Fri 12 Feb arriving late afternoon and
departing before daylight the next day. Has anyone seen the Crested Honey
Buzzard since 31 Jan which is the last record I can find on eBird? If the bird
is still around, as someone who has never birded in Perth, any tips on where
best to look at Lake Joondalup will be greatly appreciated as we will be
dashing (within the speed limit of course) in a hire car straight from the
airport.

Many thanks
Sue
