Many years back (1960s-1970s) there was a pair of Paradise Shelducks on a
pond in an inner Sydney park - I think the Royal Botanical Gardens. I don't
know if they were captive birds but were not in an enclosure. I couldn't
tell whether they had been pinioned.

It appears that the Lake Wollumboola bird is the first to be recorded
outside New Zealand by that facility. However the species is on a Birds
Australia checklist of Australian birds, implying records this side of the

Presumably the inclusion on the BA list refers to the 5 birds on Lord Howe
Island (LHI) for a few days in 1950, as reported in HANZAB.
If all of that is correct this would seem to be the first time the species
has made it to the mainland. Have I interpreted the situation correctly?
If so its a pity the Birdata map doesn't show the LHI record.
