Here is a comment from Stephen Debus:

Hi Shirley,

The Barred Owl attacks read like defence of nest or fledglings, whereas the 
Horned Owl attacks on 'Davey Crockett' type hats would be mistaken predation 
attempts.  Our large owls (Powerful, Rufous, Barking, Masked, also Boobooks) 
will defend the nest against humans too.
