It's both Chris,
But I prefer the secondary coverts because it is so obvious to see.
Male Australian Little Bittern has much reduced tips to Greater Primary
coverts which can be very tough to see, female has more obvious brown tips
but can at times be difficult, juvenile has very obvious/spectacular orange
rufous tips.
But when it comes to greater secondary coverts, Australian Little Bittern
has a run of the outer most third or more that form a solid block of brown,
grandma with her glasses on can see it. Whereas Yellow Bittern has no brown
outer secondary coverts at all, presenting with an intact solid panel of
pale right to the secondaries and entirely black primaries and primary
coverts.
