Bird-a-Day

I really like the 7-birds-a-week model and I'm going to suggest it (with
due acknowledgement) to Trey who runs B-a-D. Others may already have done
this.

I can't see myself doing B-a-D next year because I have dropped out of so
many other things to go birding at odd times of the day and night just to
get that elusive bird for the day. I need to get my life back (though it's
nice to be a real birder for a change!).

I like the fun of birding strategically - some days I have one or two
target birds and I can relax after I've seen them. But what usually happens
is that I'll get the targets and then spend all the rest of the available
time looking for more birds, and still get home late (just ask my family
...)

I have 26 species that I see easily most days, and 38 "go to" birds that I
can find at particular spots without much trouble, and about another 20
that I will need a bit more effort to find. I'm hoping that should see me
reach 10th July, my exit point last year. But any day I could have a day
like John Harris, where I don't record anything new on the way to work, and
find myself watching night fall before I leave work. I've already used Barn
Owl and Tawny Frogmouth, so there's only Boobook left - unless I drive a
bit further and listen for Powerful Owl!

Anyway, it's all good fun, and it gives me a justification to do far more
birding than I ever have before. And so far people around me accept that as
an excuse ... normally I'd get frowned at for saying "I can't come because
I'll be birding" but it's more acceptable to say "I can't come because I
need to get my bird for the day!"

Happy birding everyone!
