Date: Wednesday, April 2, 2014

Location: Goolwa Effluent Ponds

Spotless Crake (Porzana tabuensis) (1) An immature/sub-adult bird feeding along
the margin of the main pool.

Freckled Duck (Stictonetta naevosa) (19)

Little Eagle (Hieraaetus morphnoides) (1) An adult, in an almost exact repeat
of one I saw here two years ago, approached from Goolwa, circled overhead
gaining height and left towards the South.

Pink-eared Duck (Malacorhynchus membranaceus) (80+)

Australian Shelduck (Tadorna tadornoides) (160+)

There is now water only in the large pool nearest to the road which has
significant exposed margins. While I was there 2 workmen drove around the bank
of the large new inaccessible pool in a sort of golf buggy and flushed a large
number of ducks from that pool which separated into a flock of 160+ Australian
Shelduck and a mixed flock of predominantly Pink-eared Ducks. Some dropped into
the main accessible pool and the Freckled Ducks increased from 14 to 19. Most
of the circling ducks then returned to the inaccessible pool. Very frustrating!

Location: Dry Creek Saltfields

Brown Quail (Coturnix ypsilophora) (7) 7 Birds on small track just off main

lagoons on western track, most adult in breeding plumage.

Red-necked Stint (Calidris ruficollis) (400) Birds along western track and
adjacent to Buckland Lake. At least 20 in pre-breeding plumage.

Curlew Sandpiper (Calidris ferruginea) (100) Birds on shallow mudflats adjacent
to Buckland Lake (which is dry), a separate mixed flock (with Red necked Stint)
seen in flight away from this area so numbers probably nearer 200 birds. A
number of birds in various stages of 'colouring up'.

Red-necked Avocet (Recurvirostra novaehollandiae) (150) Most birds at end of
'spit' facing western track.

Sacred Kingfisher (Todiramphus sanctus) (4) Birds together on transmission
wires near bridge, western track.

First time at Saltfields that I have not seen a single Egret of any species,
both species of Spoonbill present in small numbers.
