Sooty Tern
Nelly Bay, Magnetic island
An adult Sooty Tern in poor condition just made it to land on the head wall of the harbor late this afternoon before it seemed to crash and collapse, the bird was flushed away by a car before I could make a rescue attempt.

Red-necked Phalarope
Umagico Settling Ponds 10° 54' 7.74", 142° 20' 20.94"
This is the 4th Red-necked Phalarope I have seen in 3 separate locations in 4 days. There are still 2 at Bamaga settling ponds 10 54S 142 23E 1' Cell tonight. Possibly the very heavy rain last week courtesy of a cyclone which seemed to drain the monsoonal trough from southern Indonesia/PNG to feed it. In it's course it traveled straight over us. This may have moved the birds from their pelagic non-breeding residence to here.

Black Noddy

A very tired looking adult Bird let me get within arms reach as it rested on rocks surrounding the harbor. A rare visitor to Magnetic Island? (Moderator's Note: - This bird's occurrence here is no doubt the result of last week's Tropical Cyclone Dylan and the continuing windy and stormy local weather.)

Red-necked phalarope
Bamaga settling ponds 10 54S 142 23E 1' Cell, Queensland, AU
Re-found at original site form 2 days prior. Flushed from meager vegetation at pond edge and went to water. Spinning, plucking insects as previously described. Watched for 1 hour. Very approachable again to within 3-4 metres before it would swim away. One short water-to-water flight of 10 metres with single call. Grainy pic attached to give general idea.
