Birdline South Australia

Published sightings for the week ending 9 Feb 2014.

Sun 2 Feb Fork-tailed Swift, Welcome Swallow, Buller's Albatross, Flesh-footed Shearwater. Port MacDonnell Pelagic, about 10 ks from shore
Highlight of the trip wasn't a seabird. I first saw a Welcome Swallow, way out to sea, but not aimlessly flying around, it was hawking around a group of gannets for insects & where we were there were heaps of flies & dragonflies. We then spotted a large group of Fork-tailed Swifts, about 500 (hard to count under the circumstances), flying actually close to the sea. They also appeared to be wheeling around looking for insects. This is all remarkable since we were about 10 ks from shore! The hot weather (40 degrees) must have forced the insects out sea & the swallow & swifts followed. Fairly quiet pelagic with 1 Buller's Albatross, a large number of Flesh-footed Shearwaters (about 150, the commonest bird!), Shy, Black-browed, Campbell & Yellow-nosed Albatross, about 10 Great-winged Petrels, a few Pomarine & Arctic Jaegers & a few White-faced Storm-petrels & a Little Penguin. Short-tailed & Fluttering Shearwaters were sparse all day.
Kevin Bartram, and those aboard the vessel.

Sat 1 Feb Crested Shrike-tit Harrogate
A group of three Crested Shrike-tits sitting low in tree and coming down to water bowl.
