Further to Mick¹s sighting of a possible morph Pied Heron: Hilary Thompson
and I first sighted such birds back in the 1980s, at Fogg Dam and Leanyer
Sewage Pond. Others also saw similar birds.
At the time Hilary and I thought they were Pied Heron/White-faced Heron
hybrids. I told Max King, then curator of vertebrates at the NT Museum of
Arts and Sciences about the bird. His only suggestion was that I shoot it
and bring it in for DNA testing, not really a solution at all for various
good reasons.
Then about 2000 I spotted another atypical Pied Heron at Leanyer. Apart
from being much larger than a typical PH, this bird had some
characteristics of White-necked Heron . Since then I¹ve seen a couple of
other strange birds, one of which I photographed.
I haven¹t time at the moment to dig up my scattered records (scattered
because we are still unpacking after shifting to the rural area last year),
but I have the photos at hand if anyone is interested.
