thousand assorted waterfowl in flooded farm paddocks of Brooksby's 'Hawks Nest'
farm c 2 km E Murrays Lagoon, Cape Gantheaume CP, 18 November 2013.

Pink-eared Duck (Malacorhynchus membranaceus) (c1000) congregated over shallow

paddocks bordering NE and E side of Murrays Lagoon; recent breeding confirmed
by observation of recently hatched ducklings, 18 Novenber 2013.

Latham's Snipe (Gallinago hardwickii) (3) feeding/skulking about in dense
grassy herbage on edge of flooded pasture, Brooksby's 'Hawks Nest' farm on NE

November 2013 (2).

Red-kneed Dotterel (Erythrogonys cinctus) (13) 10 adults and three advanced
juvenile runners on edge of shallow floodwater throughout inundated paddocks of
Brooksby's 'Hawks Nest' farm, NE and E of Murrays Lagoon, Kangaroo Island, 18

significant increase on KI over recent years.

Whiskered Tern (Chlidonias hybrida) (100+) black-bellied breeding-plumaged
birds hawking insects over flooded lagoon/paperbarks directly below Bald Hill
Lookout on N edge of Murrays Lagoon, Kangaroo Island, 18 November 2013.

Short-tailed Shearwater (Puffinus tenuirostris) (1000s) 'wrecked' along S coast
of Kangaroo Island during November 2013-hundreds of dead birds strewn along
Vivonne Bay Beach is typical of what has happened all along S coast of KI.

Date: Tuesday, November 26, 2013

Location: Kangaroo Island

Painted Button-quail (Turnix varius) (5) adult male with four tiny chicks
running behind, crossed Playford Highway several km E of West End Highway
intersection, West Gosse Lands, Flinders Chase NP, Kangaroo Island, 15 November
2013. A pleasing breeding observation for a species seemingly in decline on KI
over past 40 years (feral cats?)

---------------------------------------------

Date: Wednesday, November 27, 2013

Location: Pub Lake, Robe.

Latham's Snipe (Gallinago hardwickii) (60) So many Latham's Snipe to be found
at Robe. On Pub Lake, adjacent to Fox Lake, they have nowhere to hide, mostly
out feeding, as I watched they kept arriving in groups of 2 or 3 until
eventually I had 60 in view. This morning I could find 39 in view, feeding or
resting in the edges of the vegitation on Fox Lake and viewed from the Bird
Hide.
Plenty of Red-knee Dotterels and a few Black-fronted Dotterels along with other
water birds.

Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) (1) Both these birds with breeding plumage flew
into view together. There has been one I have seen before but this is the first
time for 2 together. Photo attached.
