It looks to me like just fairy martin nests. I think the ones without the
spout are just unfinished or broken away fairy martin nests. Unless there is
something really strange about the scale, it seems really weird to think
these are wasps' nests. 

David, Are you going to respond to the author of this website about this?

I was just reading an article about the old transcontinental telegraph route
that includes a picture of "wasp nests." They look like swallow nests to me
(third picture down):

Not being particularly strong on nest identification (at best) and never
having been to this part of the country, can anyone suggest whose nests the
picture depicts? They look every bit like swallow nests to me and, as best
as I can guess, Welcome Swallows are the only likely bird in the middle of
the continent.

Thoughts welcome!
