Sun 1 Sep Brolga and Sarus Crane Delta Downs Station, Normanton-Karumba Road., Queensland
600-700 a fortnight ago with numbers increasing every day. A 1000 last week, closer to 2000 this week as water dries up. Look like mobs of grey sheep out on the plains with their heads down digging for bulbs, come into the water in dams and lagoons beside road in the heat of the day and go back out to feed on dusk. 300 to 400 standing in a dam like Flamingo's All gone on Friday 30th August, told they migrate to Atherton Tablelands to feed on pea crops etc. and to breed as there is no swamps left in Karumba area. (Moderator Note:- Sarus Crane breeding records are in the gulf country around Normanton mainly January - April, Brolga breeding season in Northern. Queensland is mainly January-February).

Red Goshawk Kairi District, Queensland
As part of Cairns Festival week, the Cairns Bird Club holds a 24 hour competitive bird count. The area surveyed is within one days reach of Cairns, commonly Port Douglas to Innisfail, coastal and west to the Atherton Tablelands. This list represents 1 team of 3 observers. Red Goshawk The Atherton Tablelands is currently very active with raptors. Approximately 5 kilometers east of Tolga, we stopped to observe a Spotted Harrier over pasture. A tower of raptors was then spotted nearby. At the top, a Wedge-tailed Eagle, then lower down a Brown Goshawk, a Brown Falcon, 10 + Black Kite, and a single Red Goshawk. Within 10 minutes travel, the two Black Falcons were located in a loose aggregation of Black Kite.
