Sat 24 Aug Cotton Pygmy-goose Lake Mitchell (Quaids Dam)
5 birds seen - 2 males and three females

Square-tailed Kite Bruce Highway, just north of Jourama Falls turnoff
Pair of Square-tailed Kite very briefly low over recently burnt highway verge alongside Bruce Highway just north of Jourama Falls turnoff at noon today. Second of pair very light coloured and drifting with wings in shallow vee. Maybe bird seen above Jourama Falls camp area several weeks ago.

Crimson Rosella, Fairy Gerygone, Rufous Fantail, White-eared Monarch Riverside Gardens, Douglas, Townsville
Warm and clear. Crimson Rosella (2) Adelaide form likely escapees. Fairy Gerygone Male feeding near low bridge at Douglas Park. Rufous Fantail (1). White-eared Monarch (1) juv feeding near low bridge at Douglas Park near Fairy Gerygone.

Thu 22 Aug Channel-billed Cuckoo Sorrenson Rd, Kairi, Atherton Tablelands
One or more birds heard in late evening, my first for the season and seems early. Still one Black Falcon at nearby Mehmet Rd.

Wed 21 Aug Grey Falcon Cooktown Crossing, W of Mt. Carbine.
30-40 Black Kites were feeding on insects above the Mitchell River to the height of 120 metres. Watched them for half hour. A Grey Falcon then flew through flock as if to see what they were feeding on. A Black Kite dived at the falcon from above and pursued it out of sight away from the area. The falcon returned within a short time and the same strategy ensued.

One bird seen among four Latham's Snipe in the second lagoon. Eight Budgerigars were also seen in the area.

Foraging on flowering Bloodwoods (Photos), also Pictorella Mannikin, Long-tailed Finch and Black-throated Finch.

Southern Cassowary Mount Hypipamee National Park
Four birds were seen feeding in the car park at 8.30 am. One adult with three half grown juveniles.They were very quiet and in sight for about 10 minutes before they walked into the forest on the eastern side of the car park.

Mon 19 Aug Squatter Pigeon Mount Molloy
A quick tour with Doug Herrington this afternoon gave me a chance to photograph some great birds including Squatter Pigeon, (also seen but not at this site,Yellow- breasted Boatbill and Barred Cuckoo-Shrike) amongst other treats. Thanks Doug for a great afternoon!

White-browed Crake Cattana Wetland, Smithfield, Cairns
A quick visit back on the way to the airport gave me a great surprise in photographing a very friendly crake. I walked to the end of the main pathway and turned left and found the crake about 30 metres up near the large tree on the edge of the lake.

Sat 17 Aug Australasian Shoveler(4), Freckled Duck(4) Hasties Swamp National Park
Updates on numbers; two pairs of Shoveler at northern end now; all four Freckled Duck visible simultaneously (often one or two are hidden).

Black Falcon Mehmet Rd, Kairi, Atherton Tablelands
Two Black Falcons in the air above a freshly-cut hay paddock, with 15 Brown Falcons also present, mainly perched on haybales. The Black Falcons were harrassing each other and the many Black Kites also in the air.

Sat 3 Aug Square-tailed Kite South of Atherton (Kennedy Hwy-Malanda Rd intersection)
Late entry. One adult low over maize paddocks; another circling higher, possibly an immature.
