Black-tailed Gull
Cairns Esplanade
1 Black-tailed Gull seen today from 2pm-4pm on The Esplanade, Cairns. There is no doubt about the ID of this bird, a first immature non-breeding Black-tailed Gull, the first of this species for Cairns & one of just a handful of records in Australia. More photos are available on request - one of Martin's herewith to show some key diagnostics.

Little Button-quail
Mt Lewis, 400m back from the 10km clearing
1 very tiny quail seen walking along the track near the concrete ford, close to the top of the mountain. Looked to me like a young bird. At the time didn't know of the previous recent sighting there, so I was quite surprised to see this species walking in front of me. I got out of the car and took some photos, then lost sight of the bird, kept on walking then 2 feet in front of me flushed the bird! Plenty of Bridled Honeyeaters up the top there.

Blue-faced Parrot-Finch and possible Chesnut-breasted Cuckoo
Mt Lewis, about 5-6 Ks from 10km clearing
A small group heard in an open area, & 1 adult photographed. A few Ks lower down heard a possible Chestnut-breasted Cuckoo. Heard several times, but couldn't see the bird. Call very similar to Fan-tailed Cuckoo, but to my ears, sounded less mournful & more upbeat, with perhaps a slightly more rapid trill; this matched a recording I had of the bird I had with me.
