People have been seeing good numbers of Banded Stilts around Victoria.
Yesterday afternoon I saw a large flock (probably not the right collective
noun for stilts, and they were spread out in large clusters, small groups
and singly across a couple of kilometers) at Lonsdale Lakes (Pt Lonsdale,
near Geelong). I attempted to count them but even with a scope it was
difficult over such a big area, and I could not get anywhere near the birds
at the western end of Lake Victoria. There were 192 at the eastern end, 250
stretched out towards the end of the golf course, and possibly another 200+
at the Ocean Grove end. There may have been as many as 1000 birds. I didn't
record any Red-necked Avocets or Black-winged Stilts with them.
