There are about 20 million hunters in North America (US & Canada). According
to a number of sources that I have read on the internet, every year on
average there are approximately 800 non-fatal hunting accidents and 100
fatal. Not all of these accidents are due to misidentification of targets
though. For instance, there may be an accidental discharge of a firearm.

There may also be research from the US on this topic.
