lignum on the roadside, about 1km south of Kindaruar Corner.

Location: Hanna Lake, Jones Road, Balhannah.
White-necked Heron (Ardea pacifica) (1) Feeding in company with a Great Egret
in swmpy grass close to Jones Road.

Date: Saturday, January 5, 2013
Location: Tokuremoar Reserve, Goolwa, SA
Freckled Duck (Stictonetta naevosa) (2) Swimming with other species on larger
western lake. Male with reddish bill base. Lower numbers than previous month
when several, possibly juvenile birds, were observed in the same location.
Brown Quail (Coturnix ypsilophora) (2) Flushed & re-flushed from thick grass
and low shrubs adjacent to Melaleuca swamp.
Australian Spotted Crake (Porzana fluminea) (3) Numbers dropping rapidly or
becoming much harder to see than previous months as water levels recede.
Water levels rapidly receding. Most open water restricted to lake at the
western end.

Location: Jones Road dam, Hahndorf.
Musk Duck (Biziura lobata) (2) Two (a pair?) seen diving close to dam wall.
Blue-billed Duck (Oxyura australis) (5) Two male and three females.
Jones Road dam frequently holds a good selection of species. Viewing can only
be done from Jones Road, the dam is quite large so a spotting scope may be
useful, although generally binoculars are sufficient. After about mid afternoon
sun glare can be a problem.
