Folks,

Why not take action based on Phil Gregory's warning? No point keeping concern
to ourselves? - The Council website gives easy messaging to the Mayor and
Council

Here's my effort - go get 'em

Dear Mr Manning,
I hear with some alarm that there is a proposal to dump dredging spoil on the
flats in front of the Esplanade to create an artificial "beach". Oh dear! Do
you have any idea what that will mean in revenue loss to local businesses? I
mean really, when you have beautiful beaches close by, who will be thrilled
with a reclaimed environment that will revert to tidal flats and mangroves
without constant maintenance expenditure as an impost on ratepayers.
Alternatively, you must know that every visitor to the Wet Tropics interested
in the environment and birds in particular makes the Cairns Esplanade a "must"
for the visiting migratory shorebirds that rely on that environment, as well as
the mangroves and boardwalk at the northern end?
Do you know that "Birdlife" for example has 10,000 members all of whom would
like to visit and many (like myself) have visited several times. I am visiting
you again in November and use Cairns as a base with Rydges or Acacia Court for
accomm. Why? because they are on the Esplanade!!! Sure I am taking a trip to
Iron Range and will spend time on the Tableland, visit Michaelmas Cay etc but
starting and leaving and for spells in between I stay on the Esplanade and give
local businesses the revenue. Should I cancel those bookings? Or will this just
be the last time I enjoy it - and then need to advise thousands via our
websites and newsgroups not to bother!
I really do suggest a rethink?
Best Regards - and I love FNQ or wouldn't bother writing.
Graeme Stevens
