Spotted Harrier and lots of other raptors Castlereagh
This morning my friend and I were shooting out at Castlereagh and saw at least one (if not two) Spotted Harriers, a Swamp Harrier, White-bellied Sea Eagle, two Brown Falcons (one tried to subdue a Red-bellied Black Snake), several Black-shouldered Kites and a pair of Nankeen Kestrels. A Whistling Kite was our first visitor and came in and swooped at fish within 20 meters as we lay on the ground in our ghillie suits. Later this afternoon I saw (possibly a third) a Spotted Harrier and another White-bellied Sea Eagle. I have managed one shot of the Spotted Harrier this evening from afar. Feel free to browse a selection of images from our session this morning here: http://amatteroflight.com/gallery2/v/large/PL30.09/

This is only my 3rd sighting of Topknots in the Hawkesbury and the largest group I have seen there. Also interesting was a pair of Collared Sparrowhawks circling above then later a pair of Brown Goshawks circling above in the same spot. There were Little and Musk Lorikeets, Rainbow Bee-eaters and Scarlet Honeyeaters. I also heard my first Dollarbird and Leaden Flycatcher here for the season.

Australian Pratincole 10km north of Hay
Was very surprised when, while driving West Wyalong, I spotted two small brown birds walking in the middle of the highway. As we approached, they took off, and I realised that it was a pair of Australian Pratincoles! We subsequently got some great views of these excellent birds. Also on the plains around Hay were hundreds of raptors - every 100m there was a new bird (mostly Black Kites and Kestrels, but also Brown Falcons, Black-shouldered and Whistling Kites - probably drove past a Black Falcon or two, etc)

Azure Kingfisher, Red-necked Avocets, Marsh Sandpiper, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper Private Properties, North West of Moree (10km and 20km)
We went to two properties today. The 1st one brought us good luck with an Azure Kingfisher seen flying over the river bank on the edge of the property. The bird was found again calling. 2 (A pair) of Red-necked Avocets were seen off the fenceline on an ephemeral lagoon with various ducks, dotterels, waders and other waterbird species. Several Diamond Doves (over 10) and up to 30 Eastern Rosellas are still present. (This property had to be viewed as we didn't have time available on our previous farm trip). On the 2nd property - we only viewed one of its double dams, there were at least 16 Red-necked Avocets again, definitly more though, off the dams wall on floodwaters with a pair of Black-winged Stilts which were also found regularly. Then on the actual dams, several more waders - (migratory) 1 Latham's Snipe, 2 Marsh Sandpipers and 6 Sharp-tailed Sandpipers. Very large flocks of Red-kneed Dotterel, Black-winged Stilt and Pink-eared Ducks are still present on both properties. A small flock of Chestnut-breasted Mannikins and Grey-crowned Babblers were seen. 100's of Grebes - Australasian & Hoary. Caspian Terns, Whiskered Terns and Gull-billed Terns were in good numbers and are back. An Australian Hobby was seen as well. A photo was taken of the Red-necked Avocets and Sharp-tailed Sandpipers (not clear). Unfortunately, the Marsh Sandpiper could only be located through binoculars and the Latham's Snipe was way too quick!

Superb Parrot River Road, Bathurst.
While making breakfast this morning, I heard a familiar call (although not familiar for my back yard!). Grabbing the binoculars, I dashed outside to try and locate the source, somewhere at the top of a 20m Himalayan Cedar. It sounded like two birds, but I couldn't be sure. Eventually, one of them moved and I got a flash of yellow bib underscored with red. A Red Wattlebird, currently nesting in the garden, was obviously not as pleased to hear the parrots as I was, and chased them off, which was when I got the best view of (what turned out to be) a pair of Superbs as they flew off, north down the Macquarie River. Co-ordinates: 149 06' 60" E, 33 15' 53" S.

possible Red- footed Booby Capricorn Canal, South Golden Beach, Ocean Shores, Brunswick Heads
Description: a large bird preening on a branch hanging low over the water at around 2.30pm. Its large bright red webbed feet and thick red legs were particularly obvious. The general colour was beige/brown. Apparently it had a large bill but the bill colour was not noticed. Apparently, the bird was large ("an inexperienced co-observer thought it was an albatross and also noted the red legs and feet and particularly nobbly feet"). A Silver Gull was considered (because of the webbed red feet) but ruled out by size and plumage colour. The observer's conclusion was intermediate morph Red-footed Booby. Unfortunately no photographs were taken. [Moderator's note (NH): It would be great if this bird could be confirmed. Red-footed Booby will require a submission to NSW ORAC]

Galah / Corella hybrid Lake Cathie beach reserve
Sue and I stopped to look at a group of about a dozen Corellas at the beach at Lake Cathie on the 21st and found a group of mostly Little Corellas, with a few Long billed Corellas and a single hybrid Corella / Galah. We did take some pics but they aren’t any good except to see what parts of the birds came from where. Firstly we could not determine if it was a Galah / Little or Galah / Long billed hybrid. The bill was small but then so is the bill of a Galah What first alerted us to the bird was that it had the grey wings with dark primaries of a Galah (though paler than a Galah) while the rest of the bird was mostly whitish and looked primarily like a Little Corella. However the crest appeared to be that of a Galah and there were some pink areas on the face and breast, however these were the pink of a Galah rather than a Corella, in particular the breast feathers were coloured rather than the under feathers. The bird also had quite pink / orange under wings. Finally it had the blue orbital eye ring of the Corella, and perhaps this was the pointer for the bird being a cross with a Little Corella as the shape was that of a Little Corella.
