Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) (1) A single bird seen between Island 
View Drive and Goose Island.

Nankeen Night Heron (Nycticorax caledonicus) (2) Two birds flushed from dense 
conifers on Island View Drive.

Square-tailed Kite (Lophoictinia isura) (1) Two adult birds observed for 
approximately ten minutes circling low over native vegetation adjoining Hale 
Conservation Park and low over house.

Horsfield's Bronze-Cuckoo (Chrysococcyx basalis) (1) Not seen before in this 
area - was being harassed by a New Holland Honeyeater and appeared to be 
holding its own.

Location: Kangaroo Island

Great-winged Petrel (Pterodroma macroptera) (1) beach-washed at Bales Bay, 20 
August 2012. Collected for SAM.

Fairy Prion (Pachyptila turtur) (6) Beach-washed on Bales Bay (3) and Vivonne 
Bay (3) - found on 20th August 2012. One reasonable specimen collected for SAM.

Shy Albatross (Thalassarche cauta) (c300) flying W around Cape du Couedic, 17 
August 2012. Easily the most common albatross seen over several hours of 
scoping inshore waters.

Black-browed Albatross (Thalassarche melanophris) (3) flying W around Cape du 
Couedic, 17 August 2012. SW storm with strong winds blowing seabirds closer to 
shore.

Indian Yellow-nosed Albatross (Thalassarche bassi) (3) flying W around Cape du 
Couedic, 17 August 2012. SW storm with strong winds blowing seabirds closer to 
shore.

Southern Giant-Petrel (Macronectes giganteus) (2) flying W around Cape du 
Couedic, 17 August 2012. SW storm with strong winds blowing seabirds closer to 
shore. Note well: these two birds were immature and so exact determination of 
species remains unconfirmed. Most likely SGPetrel as it is more common than 
NGPetrel at this location.

Australasian Gannet (Morus serrator) (c200) flying W around Cape du Couedic, 17 
August 2012. Easily the 2nd most common seabird seen over several hours of 
scoping inshore waters - comparable to Shy Albatross.

Eastern Curlew (Numenius madagascariensis) (1) roosting on Busby Islet CP 
during flood tide, 20 August 2012.

Royal Spoonbill (Platalea regia) (20) about 14 nests with adults incubating 
eggs or very small young- nests atop Nitre-bushes amongst Australian White Ibis 
rookery-20th August 2012. First breeding on KI recorded only few years ago at 
this location.

Straw-necked Ibis (Threskiornis spinicollis) (12) about 10 nests with adults 
incubating eggs or very small young- nests atop Nitre-bushes amongst Australian 
White Ibis rookery-20th August 2012. First breeding on KI recorded only few 
years ago at this location.

Location: Kangaroo Island

Little Pied Cormorant (Phalacrocorax melanoleucos) (10) Incubating eggs or very 
small young in nests atop Nitre-bushes on Busby Islet CP. Brreding in 
association with White and Straw-necked Ibis and Royal Spoonbills - and the 
tail-end of large Pied/Black-faced Cormorant breeding event which is mainly 
centred on late autumn-winter months..

Australian White Ibis (Threskiornis molucca) (c400) On visit of 20th August 
2012 observed about 150 nests. Adults incubating eggs, very small young and 
others tending 1/2 grown young in nests atop Nitre-bushes on Busby Islet CP. 
Brreding in association with Straw-necked Ibis, Little Pied Cormorants and 
Royal Spoonbills - and the tail-end of large Pied/Black-faced Cormorant 
breeding event which is mainly centred on late autumn-winter months. breeding 
birds divided into three separate rookeries about 100-200 m apart.

Silver Gull (Larus novaehollandiae) (c500) 20th August 2012. About 300+ nests 
now deserted as young have fled nest and hiding amongst samphire and 
nitre-bushes on Busby Islet CP-young ranging from small fluffy runners to large 
fledgelings and even a few juveniles on wing with adults. Nest rookery in 
Halosarcia samphire bushes all along N side of islet.

Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) (3) Feeding in shallows around Busby Islet 
during flood tide 20th August 2012. Several pairs have courted and nest built 
here during spring of past two years but to date no serious incubation/young 
have been seen. Birds again in breeding dress and will keep an eye on 
proceedings as this species not yet confirmed breeding on KI.

Little Grassbird (Megalurus gramineus) (5) Vocal and skulking about in dense 
samphire/nitre-bush vegetation, Busby Islet 20th August 2012.

Great Egret (Casmerodius albus) (3) Fishing in Harriet River estuary, Vivonne 
Bay, July-August 2012.

Banded Stilt (Cladorhynchus leucocephalus) (300) Feeding and roosting on saline 
Wisanger Lagoon throughout August 2012-numbers generally build to several 
1,000s here by early summer.

Hooded Plover (Thinornis rubricollis) (16) on bales Bay beaches x 3 on 19th 
August 2012. One group of eight. All birds adult plumage except one grey-headed 
immature.

Hooded Plover (Thinornis rubricollis) (6) Five adults and one marble-headed 
immature (mosaic of black and grey feathers on head) on N side of Cape Rouge, 
24th August 2012. Regular here on limestone base exposed at low tide - much 
sand flats and small shell-grit beaches here also.

Eastern Reef Egret (Egretta sacra) (1) 24 th August 2012. Feeding at Cape Rouge 
at low tide-regularly seen at this location in loose association with much more 
common White-faced Heron

Location: Loop Rd, Salt Creek. Coorong.

Banded Stilt (Cladorhynchus leucocephalus) (1000) All of these Stilts were in 
full or nearly full Adult plumage.

The Banded Stilts were on the second lake, left hand side as you drive along 
Loop Rd.  Only a dozen or so Red-necked Avocets.  a pair of Wedge-tailed Eagles 
flying along very low, check the waters edges I guess. All of the lakes are 
full of water.  Salt Creek is very full and flowing towards the Coorong.

A Rufus Bristlebird seen on the road side on my way home, nr Pelican Point.

Location: Mark Point, Coorong.

Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres) (3) The birds were on the rocks and moving 
with the water that was blowing in, then all flew to the left.

Pallid Cuckoo (Cuculus pallidus) (6) Pallid Cuckoo's were everywhere today, 
would have seen more than a dozen

Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) (4) A few scattered around on the 
Coorong waters. Some close to the Narrung Ferry.

Plenty of birds found while doing the OBP Survey.  Lots of Hardheads but not so 
many HH Grebes today. 

Weather varied between rain and sun with plenty of wind.

Hundreds of Pelicans on the full wetland along Poltalloch Rd Narrung.  I was 
watching 21 Great Egrets and 2 Royal Spoonbills when a farmer came along.  Says 
he has Parrots up on his block near the tall trees.  Also had Budgerigars up 
there, good news.
