Consultant sought for Migratory Soaring Bird project web tool development
23-08-2012
Under the auspices of the UNDP/GEF Migratory Soaring Birds project, BirdLife
International seeks a consultant / firm with extensive experience in the
field of web mapping development to undertake a short term consultancy to
develop a web mapping tool for visualizing the sensitivity of migratory
soaring birds to wind energy development in the Rift Valley/ Red Sea Flyway.
The web-tool will draw together, from a variety of sources, relevant data on
migratory soaring bird species, the sites and routes known to be important
for them and other information which could inform interpretation of
sensitivity. The web tool will provide a central location for visualising
these data and appropriate analysis to aid its interpretation, enabling
users to gain an understanding of the likely risk to soaring birds of wind
energy development at different locations in the Rift Valley / Red Sea
Flyway.
This consultancy is part of a larger programme of work to be undertaken as
part of the Migratory Soaring Birds Project to gather and compile relevant
data on soaring birds, refine the sensitivity-mapping methodology and
provide developers in the energy sector with improved information and
guidance in relation to the potential sensitivity of locations for soaring
birds, in particular, those on migration. This consultancy aims to develop
the web-tool will therefore need to be conducted within the context of the
wider programme of work and with on-going dialogue with the BirdLife
International team working on data gathering/ compilation and
sensitivity-mapping methodology. For the purposes of this document the terms
consultant and contractor are used interchangeably and mean the same thing.
Interested parties are requested to submit an expression of interest in the
form of a Curriculum Vitae and covering letter (outlining suitability for
conducting the contract). Expressions of interest should be sent to John
Cornell and Vicky Jones
 by 14 September 2012.
