Hi all,

The governments in the States of Qld and NSW need to be reminded of why, not
too many years ago, laws were tightened around gun ownership and use -
domestic violence was one of the biggest reasons. Guns and shooters were
rigorously scrutinised and licensed in a bid to reduce gun related crime and
powerful weapons were totally outlawed. Shooting and carrying weapons in
public places was also outlawed. Whilst murders still occur, most using
weapons other than guns, lessening gun laws to please the gun lobby will
increase the risk of gun related crime rising. A prime example is the
horror perpetrated yesterday in Colorado by a gun-bearing man with a grudge
of some sort. Guns were once feared in our society and governments brought
in tough gun laws to protect our citizens - don't let the government forget
that this is their responsibility.

Birders should make this point in any correspondence about shooting once
more being allowed in National Parks. How easy will it be for criminals to
raid shooters camped in National Parks and steal their weapons? Whilst
these guns should be "locked" up in appropriate storage whilst not in use by
such shooters, criminals are always one step ahead of the general public.

Cheers,

Sandra Gallienne
