Date: Monday, May 28, 2012
Location: On our property at Rockleigh
Red-capped Robin (Petroica goodenovii) (1)
Diamond Firetail (Stagonopleura guttata) (6)
Varied Sittella (Daphoenositta chrysoptera) (1)
Clad from head to foot in waterproofs on a very drizzly day, I was pushing
through wet tangled gum trees looking for outbreaks of Bridal Creeper (a
serious weed). First 6 diamond firetails hopped through a dead tree. Next a
sittella (only 1) appeared and fossicked in the foliage, then there was a flash
of red, and our first red-capped robin, a male, put in a very brief appearance.
A few minutes later a group of thornbills shot through the top of a tree, so
quickly that it was impossible to positively identify them. They looked most
like yellow thornbills except that they were not very yellow.
As we pulled out of our gate just before dark we spotted a grebe in the small
waterhole on the other side of the road. It was probably a hoary-headed but the
light was too poor to be certain. Anyway, it was the first grebe seen on or
from our property.

White-bellied Sea-Eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster) (2) Two birds slowly flying
down the beach towards Goolwa.
Fan-tailed Cuckoo (Cacomantis flabelliformis) (1) Made a lovely change from
spotting all the Singing Honeyeaters. Sat still long enough for identification
and a photo.
Brown Quail (Coturnix ypsilophora) (3) Flushed the quail walking back through
the dunes to Beacon 19 car park.
