I had so many requests for info re birding around Kuala Lumpur, I have
decided to post it here on B-Aus. Hope you don't mind.

Hi Folks,

I had an opportunity to spend a day out in the region around KL.

As I only had one day, I decided to take the advice of Ed Williams and
contacted Lee at Endemic Guides Malaysia (+60 16 838 2222,
which proved to be pricy for Asia but worth it
considering the cost of hire cars, the fact I was completely unfamiliar with
the region and that I slept almost the whole time we were driving due to a
busy 2 weeks work prior.

I stayed at the Concorde Inn next to the Airport which I discovered is at
the wrong end of KL and cost me an extra MR80 each way.

Lee picked me up at 5.30am sharp, and we headed north then east of the city
along the main E8 highway.

The first place we stopped was the Toll Gate on the Pantai Timur Highway at
Kampung (I have called Bukit Rengit below for some reason)

at 3-31-35N, 102-10-34E. Here we had great views over the fence of
Black-thighed falconet, Red Jungle-fowl ect.

Next we headed north under the Highway towards Deerland, stopping only a few
K's along the small road that heads there. Ive called this Bukit Rengit
Village at 3-32-25N, 102-09-13E. We walked in to the left along a small
track. Here we had Black and Red Broadbill, Little Green Pigeon, Crescent
Serpent Eagle etc.

We then headed along to Deerland proper stopping a few k's just before in
amazing forest at what I have called

Krau Forest below at 3-34-47N, 102-09-50E. This was by far the most amazing
place and I could have spent all day just here. Apparenly this road towards
and beyond is brilliant and also great for night birds. I am definitely
coming back! Here we had Garnet Pitta calling from 20ft in the air, 2 Black
and Yellow Broadbill building a nest above the car, 2 types of Trogons, 4
types of Malkohas. Amazing. We then drove on to Deerland and birded here
for a while picking up Babblers, Barbets and Bulbuls.

Heading off we stopped on the way back for lunch at one of the many little
cafes in a group before stopping at the turnoff to the Genting Highlands at
3-20-51N, 101-46-45E looking for and dipping on Hornbills but picking up
more Barbets and Woodpeckers Spectacled Spiderhunter and Verditer

Lastly we headed up the hill towards the Genting Casino (massive) and
meandered down a small road to an Internationally recognised site at
3-23-49N, 101-47-11E. This was quiet but we managed a few more Bulbuls,
Barbets and one Great Hornbill.

Time to head back to KL we finished up at around 6pm and got back to the Inn
at around 7.30pm.

A brilliant day out. I am sure there are many other spots around including
the famed Frasers Hill but for what I wanted, this was excellent.

Thanks again to Ed Williams for the tip and Lee from Endemic Guides for
being a great guide and good company.
