I received this from Penelope Hillemann whose article I linked to - she
seems to have had trouble with the link I posted but when I checked it
worked fine for me and I guess others read it as well - anyway here is the
link she gave me (which misses the .au part of the address)

Hello David,

I noticed when checking referral sources for my blog that there was a
little flurry of activity coming from the
http://bioacoustics.cse.unsw.edu.au site, and I found your link to my blog
post. Thank you for sharing it! I did find, though, when trying to click on
the link that you provided, that the ".au" extension and the next word of
your sentence somehow got inserted into the URL, so it doesn't actually
take people to the correct page but rather to a "page not found" page. I
wonder if you would be kind enough to post a corrected URL:
http://penelopedia.blogspot.com/2010/12/bird-names-to-capitalize-or-not.html
.

It looks as if there is a spirited discussion going on. I'm a
non-ornithologist blogger writing for a general audience, which is probably
why I came down (rather wishy-washily) on the side of not using the
capitalization convention except in lists. I also made a point in one of
the follow-up comments in response to the common argument along the lines
of "how do you distinguish a yellow [description] warbler from a Yellow
Warbler?," that anything you can say clearly you can probably write without
needing capitals to make your meaning clear. And I don't think many
knowledgeable birders or ornithologists would use such simple phrases in
writing that would lead to this type of confusion. But obviously the
capitals help with that process and there were good reasons to develop the
convention that exists in the birding world.

Best regards, and always up for a good style/usage discussion,

Penelope Hillemann
