The following is a digest of Sightings Reported on Birdpedia for the period 
Monday, January 9, 2012 to Sunday, January 15, 2012:

Location: Rush Lagoon, Kangaroo Island

Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) (1) Rare visitor to Kangaroo Island-first 
seen for many years.

Australian Shelduck (Tadorna tadornoides) (3000) camped on lagoon throughout 
day.

Grey Teal (Anas gracilis) (3000) mostly camped with Shelduck

Hoary-headed Grebe (Poliocephalus poliocephalus) (1000) widespread over lagoon

Sharp-tailed Sandpiper (Calidris acuminata) (100) lagoon dried back to 1/2 full 
and much shallows/mud flat exposed as ideal feeding habitat.

Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus) (170) including c 20 full grown 
immatures

Red-capped Plover (Charadrius ruficapillus) (270) including about 50+ immatures

Australasian Shoveler (Anas rhynchotis) (300) mixed in with other waterfowl, 
including c 50 Black Swan, 10x Pacific Black Duck, several Chestnut Teal, 2 x 
Hardhead and 1x Musk Duck. Lagoon dried back significantly past weeks and now 
becoming too shallow for diving ducks such as Musk and Hardhead. Surprising 
absence of Pink-eared Duck as ideal habitat.

Cape Barren Goose (Cereopsis novaehollandiae) (55) camped on lagoon shore

Whiskered Tern (Chlidonias hybrida) (2) feeding over lagoon

Location: Flinders Chase NP

Painted Button-quail (Turnix varius) (5) adult with 4x tiny chicks ran across 
main entrance road about 1 km W of main entrance to park. Four year old fire 
regeneration of E baxteri, E cosmophylla and E. remota.

Shy Heathwren (Hylacola cauta) (20+) observed throughout park during post fire 
survey over past weeks. Widespread in four year old regenerating E. remota on 
ironstone plateau and also (albeit to a lesser extent) in E. diversifolia 
coastal mallee association.

Southern Emu-wren (Stipiturus malachurus) (10) In dense E. remota/E. baxteri 
association with much Banksia, buloke, hakea and other sclerophyllous 
understory spp. in E Gosse Lands of ironstone plateau. Not found in 4 year 
post-fire areas and assumed understory structure to be still too open for this 
semi-secretive species.

Black-shouldered Kite (Elanus axillaris) (3) inhabiting low stunted E. remota/E 
baxteri four year post fire open slerophyllous shrubland/woodland of ironstone 
plateau.  Observed perched and hunting over this habitat as do Nankeen Kestrels 
and occasional Brown Falcons.

Rock Parrot (Neophema petrophila) (3) 1 x adult and 2 x immature. Along with 2 
seen at Seal Bay on 4/1/12 they represent first summer arrivals.

Little Black Cormorant (Phalacrocorax sulcirostris) (30) Flew in formation over 
Cape du Couedic and continued flying out to sea-unusual to see this species in 
park and  even more so to witness this number and behaviour.

Seagulls in a "channel" some 10 meters from the road. Photo available.

Elegant Parrot (Neophema elegans) (6) 3 Jan 2012 at S end of Elegood Road 
feeding on seeds of Bidgee Widgee Bur Acaena sp. in post fire regenerating 
coastal mallee-first sighting this sp. for summer season

Elegant Parrot (Neophema elegans) (3) 3 Jan 2012 - flushed from pasture on farm 
in Haines district c 10 km NW of American River.

Painted Button-quail (Turnix varius) (1) 5 November 2011 in most frequently 
observed location for this sp. at intersection of Playford and West End 
Highways, W Gosse Lands, FCNP.

Buff-banded Rail (Gallirallus philippensis) (3) on 29 November 2011, 3 in 
garden at Penneshaw.

Buff-banded Rail (Gallirallus philippensis) (1) 8 December 2011, one ran across 
Playford Highway at The Folly 2 km W of Kingscote.

Buff-banded Rail (Gallirallus philippensis) (1) 3 January 2012-one ran across 
Playford Highway at top of Kohinoor Hill, c. 15 Km W of Kingscote.

Buff-banded Rail (Gallirallus philippensis) (2) 13 October 2011-two in garden 
near Penneshaw.

Buff-banded Rail (Gallirallus philippensis) (1) 20 September 2011-one in garden 
of Sunset Winery c. 10 Km W of Penneshaw

White-headed Petrel (Pterodroma lessonii) (1) 7 December 2011-beach derelict 
collected from Vivonne Bay Beach.

Black Falcon (Falco subniger) (1) 3 December 2012-flying over Kingscote boat 
ramp area and nearby Bay of Shoals vineyard on outskirts of Kingscote

Latham's Snipe (Gallinago hardwickii) (4) Birds were easy to see if you walk 
along the road to the right of the hide and look into the long grass at the 
swamp edge. Also Royal and Yellow-billed Spoonbill.

Location: Kangaroo Island

Eurasian Skylark (Alauda arvensis) (6) 12 November 2011-have listed Skylark in 
order to record SINGING BUSHLARK which will not match up when selecting 
species?? Anyway, I saw 6 x Singing Bushlark in farmland at North Cape just 
inland from Boxing Bay on N coast of KI on date listed. This is a little known 
species on KI.

Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) (3) 30 December 2011-adult pair with large young 
almost fledging stage-Cape Linois area, S coast of KI

Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) (3) 2 January 2012-adult pair with large young 
almost fledging stage-W of Vivonne Bay.

Eastern Reef Egret (Egretta sacra) (1) 10 Jan 2012-one foraging amongst boulder 
strewn shallows at Stokes Bay.

Australian Spotted Crake (Porzana fluminea) (6) 14 November 2011-feeding in 
freshwater sedge swamp at Vivonne Bay.

Great Egret (Casmerodius albus) (1) 12 November 2011-feed in freshwater sedge 
swamp at Vivonne Bay.

Australian Hobby (Falco longipennis) (1) 25 December 2011 to 12 January 2012 
residing in E. cladocalyx forest at Panorama Park, section 311, Menzies.

Blue-billed Duck (Oxyura australis) (6) 6 November 2011-on Kingscote sewage 
ponds.

Banded Stilt (Cladorhynchus leucocephalus) (100) 12 November 2011-on Wisanger 
Salt Lagoon. Numbers have dwindled from 5,000 on 11 November 2011 as lake dries 
back.

Common Greenshank (Tringa nebularia) (20) 8 Jan 2012-feeding across shallows of 
brackish paperbark lagoon. Sharp-tailed Sandpiper and Red-necked Stint here 
also.

Little Raven (Corvus mellori) (100+) 3 January 2012-concentrated on coastal 
heath at Vivonne Bay-feeding with Silver Gulls and Rainbow Lorikeets on ripe 
fruits of Native Currant Leucopogon parviflorous bushes.

Little Raven (Corvus mellori) (300) 3 January 2012-concentrated flock feeding 
in dry pasture paddock c. 5 km S of Emu Bay. Nearby paddock with flock of 100+. 
Food item not identified but suspect some kind of pasture beetle or the like??

Australian Raven (Corvus coronoides) (4) 15 December 2011-family group 
containing 2 x recently fledged young. This species much less common than 
Little Raven on KI. Lives in discreet family groups in forest and coastal heath 
areas.

Location: Freeling Wetlands

Spotless Crake (Porzana tabuensis) (2) Great views of a single bird crossing a 
concrete spillway into a small but thick patch of reeds, after disappearing 
from view it then called and was answered a couple of times from another bird 
back in the reeds where the first bird came from! New bird for this site! 
Couldn't believe my eyes when I first saw it!

Australian Spotted Crake (Porzana fluminea) (2) Two birds feeding and calling 
on dry edge of thick reedbed, same spot I found two a few weeks back

Late afternoon till dusk stakeout, looking for Crakes and Rails. Main target 
was to try and find a Buff-banded Rail as I think this site should be good for 
them, failed with that but got 2 Spotless Crakes instead! not a bad consolation 
prize!!

Pacific Golden Plover (Pluvialis fulva) (1) on tidal flat at Cape Rouge-has 
become extremely rare on KI with last observation of this species by me on KI 
being 10 years ago.

Grey Plover (Pluvialis squatarola) (30) feeding on tidal flats out from Cape 
Rouge, Bay of Shoals.

Baillon's Crake (Porzana pusilla) (2) Single bird near sunken crate in SW 
corner and another in the small stand of reeds near the northern outlet pipe. 
New bird for this site!

Australian Spotted Crake (Porzana fluminea) (6) Three seen, three heard, 
including one which wandered too far from the reeds and got attacked by a gang 
of six Magpies!

Resumed Crake/Rail stakeout early this morning.

White-backed Swallow (Cheramoeca leucosterna) (1) Interacting with a group of 
approximately 14 Tree Martin in and around the sand quarry on the western side 
of the southern section of the reserve.
