Date: Saturday, November 5, 2011
Location: On our property at Rockleigh
Black-shouldered Kite (Elanus axillaris) (4) A week ago one juvenile of the two
was seen standing on top of the nest (same as the week before). Today one was
flying and the other was still in the nest, and we watched the parent feed the
nest occupant (with much screaming from the youngster).
Overnight we heard heavy tramping on the veranda roof, followed by a bird
screaming. Then there was the sound of something being banged on the roof. We
guess that a winged predator (kestrel ? barn owl ? not the kites, they normally
eat mice) knew that swallows roost under the veranda and made a noise to stir
them up. Then one or two were picked off as they took flight. We didn't go out
to investigate in case we disturbed more swallows and in case more met an
unfortunate end.
