Date: Saturday, July 9, 2011

Location: Goolwa Barrage

Whistling Kite (Haliastur sphenurus) (1) While on a Field trip to Goolwa
Barrage and Hindmarsh Island today, several folk on the barrage saw one of the
resident Whistling Kites coming down to the water on the sea-ward side of the
barrage and then flying off afterwards holding an unidentifiable object. It
was a distant sighting. I have a series of pictures of event where it can be
seen, as was suspected, that the kite was fishing.
I will try to attach two of the pictures from the series, the first showing
three fish near the water's surface while the kite is approachings and the
second, the successful stike. I wasn't aware they are so versatile.
