Like Richard I recall only too well searching for several days (with Pete Milburn) over the hill slopes around Julatten (about 10 years ago from memory) flushing Painted, more Painted and then Brown Quail followed by more Painted until finally we began to flush a few Buff-breasted. Being so large they were relatively easy to identify. For a while we began to doubt they existed at all in the area. Interestingly, each of the birds that we saw were flushed from rocky areas at the base of the slopes, it appearing as though they had a little niche to themselves at the base of hill slopes and like Richard said were not seen until they were flushed.
