Birdline ACT

Published sightings for the week ending 1 May 2011.

Sun 1 May Olive-backed Oriole Garran
A single bird heard calling this morning at 0800. It confirms that I heard a single call earlier in the week. According to the ABR some birds may over winter and interestingly, the last record in 2010 was 1 May.

Sat 30 Apr Swift Parrot Wybalena Grove Cook
It took a couple of days to confirm it, as I thought I had been hearing the occasional squeak of a Swift Parrot but was never able to find the source, until today at lunchtime when one gave enough alarm calls for me to get outside in time to see it flying rapidly overhead (Wybalena Grove Cook). I suspect it has been feeding in the lerp-ridden Red Box keeping a very low profile to avoid the attention of the numerous Red Wattlebirds. There were 2 Swifties here a month ago so there may well be more than one. The Red Box are looking particularly tatty at the moment from the lerp-onslaught, so it is relatively easy to see any birds in the canopy, however there are quite a few of these trees scattered around Wybalena Grove and it's hard to search them all for silently feeding birds.

Fri 29 Apr Olive Whistler, Red-browed Treecreeper Brindabella Ranges
Near the junction of Blundells Creek Road and Warks Road (Lees Creek). First Olive Whistler I have seen in ACT for over 20 years.

Cockatiel Lyneham Ridge (COG grid cell K12)
While walking on the eastern edge of Lyneham Ridge I heard a Cockatiel: Finally I spotted the bird: It circled at quite a height over North Lyneham, possibly attracted to birds in an aviary. After several loops, constantly calling, it gradually came lower and headed for trees at the Ridge. But before it could land a Collared Sparrowhawk (female) appeared and snatched it. From behaviour, I assumed the Cockatiel was a wild bird.
