Birdline North Queensland

Published sightings for the week ending 6 Feb 2011.

Sun 6 Feb Little Kingfisher Centenary Lake, Cairns
A family group of at least 3 birds was seen & photographed near the fresh water lake today. One bird was particularly young, still having wholly pale pink legs & a tiny bill (see attached photo by MC). This juvenile was seen to be hunting for itself, or at least attempting to. Little Kingfishers normally arrive back at Centenary Lakes in late January/early Feb, after departing in October - where these local birds go to breed is unknown, but it seems to be pretty close-by judging by the age of the bird photographed.

Fri 4 Feb Greater Frigatebird Pallarenda Road Townsville
Two birds seen at 6.10 am soaring over the beach adjacent to the entrance to the Townsville Town Common on Pallarenda Road. Still a strong breeze blowing due to the after effects of Cyclone Yasi.
Ian Boyd

Birdline North Queensland is sponsored by Birds Australia North Queensland and Townsville Region Bird Observers Club and co-ordinated and hosted by Eremaea Birds.
