Published sightings for the week ending 18 Jul 2010.

Sun 18 Jul      Swift Parrot Serendip Sanctuary, Lara 
Four seen (and heard) flying over Display Brolga Pen and adjacent
Billabong (heading west). Our first record of this species from
Serendip. No evidence of them either roosting or feeding at Serendip
though.

Swifts still feeding around mulga dam

        Scarlet Honeyeater Wurundjeri Walk (eastern section), Blackburn
South. 
Two males plus what looked to be a juvi seen this morning. The first
sighting (by me) of this species at this location.

Sat 17 Jul      Buff-banded Rail Serendip Sanctuary, Lara 
A wild bird (not an escapee). Between Display Brolga Pen and (unused)
Freckled Duck enclosure.

        Blue-faced Honeyeater Horsham City 
Blue faced Honey Eaters - 20-30 Observed feeding in flowering trees and
on the ground. (Tennis Courts near the botanical Gardens) 2.30-4.30pm
Have not previously seen here - seen them at Kingfisher Lodge in
Julatten - Could not believe my eyes when seeing them here. Have photo's
- just need to process them.

Fri 16 Jul      Swift Parrot Kingower State Forest 
(20). Pigeon Rd near Grid Rd. Also Black-faced Cuckoo-shrike, Eastern
Yellow Robin, Musk and Purple-crowned Lorikeets.

        Olive-backed Oriole, Crimson Rosella Serendip Sanctuary, Lara 
Olive-backed Oriole: calling from high in a River Red Gum (1). Crimson
Rosella: was unusual at Serendip, but has been sighted here a fair bit
lately (1).

        Brush Bronzewing Long Hollow Reserve, Beaumaris 
Looked for the Brush Bronzewing reported on Tuesday, found without too
much searching around 2pm. It was wandering around the grassy area in
the middle of the reserve. New one for me and a very nice little spot
too.

        Swift Parrots Near Tullaroop Reservoir 
50 to 60 swifties feeding on red box & grey box gumnuts quite low to the
ground.

Tue 13 Jul      Bush Stone-curlew Horsham City 
Observed late this afternoon in parkland along the Wimmera River.
Spotted them from the car huddled under a tree quite close to the
roadside. Observed for about 45 minutes as they looked around -
searching for nesting site? [Moderator Note: These birds have been here
for many years - at least 35 - and nest every year if the ravens allow
them to.]

        Brush Bronzewing Long Hollow Reserve, Beaumaris 
A female seen by myself and another birder feeding under Cherry Ballart
trees. Common Bronzewings have fed at this spot in the past.

Mon 12 Jul      Little Eagle, Darter, Crested Pigeon Nicholson 
68 species were observed by EGBOC members along the rail trail and near
the boat ramp this morning. Highlights included 3 Darters, good views of
a Little Eagle soaring high above the Prince's Highway and 7 Crested
Pigeons which marks the continued extension of this species to the east
of Bairnsdale.

        Australasian Bittern Hallam Valley Rd Wetlands 
Flushed from reeds as we finished the Melbourne Water survey at 11.45.
First record for the site in 3 years of monthly surveys.

        Swift Parrot Egans Lane, Newham, 3442 
5+ birds flying westerly @ 10.30am. (First record for this area this
season).

        Australian King Parrot Heatherdale Railway Station, Heatherdale 
I saw a couple of King Parrots last week but this morning while standing
on the platform 8 King Parrots were in the trees and flying overhead,
calling loudly. A pair of Grey Butcherbirds were also singing together -
they've been there for a week or two also. What a shame to go to work...

Sun 11 Jul      Cape Barren Goose Serendip Sanctuary, Lara 
4 newly-hatched goslings seen with 2 adults. First seen by us for the
season (6).

        Scarlet Honeyeater Bend of Islands 
Birds still being seen in this area (along Ashmore Rd). 1 (possibly 2)
males and 1 brown bird seen on monthly bird survey.

        Chestnut-rumped Heathwren Brisbane Ranges NP 
Along Switch Rd a pair responded well to pishing.

        Olive-backed Oriole, Noisy Friarbird Southern Whroo Forest 
Large numbers, hundreds of very Noisy Friarbirds on corner of
Nagambie-Rusworth Rd & Rushworth-Graytown Rd. Also 1 overwintering
Olive-backed Oriole, adult type. Quite a few honeyeaters &
Purple-crowned Lorikeets & Striated Pardalotes in one place.
Yellow-plumed, Fuscous, Black-chinned, Brown-headed, Yellow-tufted,
Yellow-faced Honeyeaters all present. Also Crested Bellbird heard,
Crested Shrike-tit seen. Unfortunately too dull to get any decent
photos.

        Spotted Quail-thrush, Chestnut-rumped Heathwren, Crested
Bellbird Bailleston 
An adult Spotted Quail-thrush seen on a track on top of a ridge. A
distant photo taken. First one I've seen here for a number of years.
Also flushed a Chestnut-rumped Heathwren around some grass trees, later
heard singing. A Crested Bellbird constantly calling, later located
singing on top of a large dead tree. Also 3 robins-Red-capped, Flame &
Scarlet. Also Black-chinned Honeyeater, Chestnut-rumped Thornbill,
Rufous Whistler singing.

Fri 9 Jul       Little Eagle Cheetham Wetlands 
Dark phase adult spotted sitting in a large dead tree less than 100
metres from the Cheetham Wetlands carpark, adjacent to the Point Cooke
Coastal Park.

Mon 5 Jul       Orange-bellied Parrot WTP Werribee 
A juvenile OBP among 6 Blue-winged Parrots on wire fence along track
parallel to Spit Nature Conservation Reserve. The sighting was at
11.50am. All birds departed to T. Section lagoon area at midday. Also
seen at Point Wilson Road one juv. Nankeen Night Heron.

Sun 27 Jun      Scarlet Honeyeater Darebin Creek, near Gona St,
Heidelberg West 
One male and one female spotted, identified from photographs taken by a
member of local Friends group.
