Dear Birders
Make Carter has agreed to give a talk to Birds Australia members, guests and
visitors on Saturday 3 July 2010 at 2:00. This will take place at Building 22
in the Newington Armory close to the Birds Australia Discovery Centre.
Nweington Armory is part of the Sydney Olympic Park. The entry is at the end of
Jamieson Street which runs off Holker St in Newington. For those still in doubt
go to googlr maps and put in "Birds Australia Discovery Centre" to get a map.
Mike is probably best known to readers of this forum as Australia's foremost
twitcher - having seen some 811 birds within the geographicalboundaries of
Australia. Worthy as this feat is to focus only on this aspect of Mike's
ornithological career to underestimate his contribution to Australian birding
enormously. Mike has conducted bird surveys over many years at Edithvale and
elsewhere, he has mentored and assisted an enormous number of birders (among
them Sean Dooley as is made clear in his book "The big twitch") and, as anyone
who has read any of his many submissions to the Rarities Committee (BARC), Mike
has a detailed eye for, and an enormous knowledge of, bird topography.
Last year Mike was the recipient of the Hobb's Meday awarded to an outstanding
amateur contributor to Australian ornithology each year. Given that the Hobb's
Medal was founded by the Southern NSW group of BA the committee thought it
appropriate we invite Mike to come to Sydney to speak about his birding in
Australia. He is a good raconteur and has a fund of great stories of the
visicitudes that he has suffered in the pursuit of birds and their conservation.
I am looking forward to it with great anticipation and hope that many NSW
birders take the opportunity to hear this great contributor to Australian
ornithology speak. There is no need to book and there is no cost however for
catering purposes please let BASNA know if you are coming
