This afternoon I watched a Square-tailed Kite as it quartered the sand-dunes behind Peregian Beach on the Sunshine Coast. Later I saw two Spotted Harriers perched on fence posts at nearby Maroochy River. On no occasion was I looking for birds - I saw the kite while lying on the beach, and the harriers while driving home from the beach. I've seen Square-tailed Kites in this area on several occasions and they could be the same birds. It is possible they are the birds that have nested near Teewantin, not far away, in recent years.
