I have absolutely no problem with the concept of private property when out
birdwatching, in fact most of my watching does involve looking into private
properties where birds occur. A relatively small amount of time is spent on
public ground, except perhaps on beaches or in parks etc. If a landholder
expresses some concern at me overlooking their land I just explain what I'm
doing and if that turns out to be unacceptable I excuse myself and depart -
nothing difficult in that.
I have every sympathy with landholders not wanting unknown persons wandering
around on their land - I have a property myself and get quite annoyed when
someone enters without so much as a "may I"? They are usually bushwalkers
or birders and therefore relatively harmless, but a simple courtesy of being
asked first would be really appreciated. "Ask and thou shalt receive"
someone said somewhere, not a birdwatcher methinks.

That information is great re the photography but also highlights how little
public space there actually is for us, where a person can legally walk
without being confronted. In a country with so much supposed freedom, it
really is limited as to where one can freely go. It feels like all we have
is ones own yard, the footpath and road side, public spaces like parks and
beaches. The rest of it is "with permission". When I go on bird watching
holidays it always strikes me that so much of the scenery and much of my
birding is on private property, in areas where I am "allowed" to go.
