There was a news bulletin on Sydney's ABC TV last night which mentioned that
there is a gold mining proposal for the Coromandel Peninsula and Great
Barrier Island. The bulletin indicated that the mining would be in a
national park and near some beaches (don't know how accurate the report is).
The current NZ Government seems to be in favour of granting approval despite
protests from conservation groups and the NZ Greens.

Given the presence of New Zealand Storm-Petrels in the Hauraki Gulf, off the
coast this peninsula, I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a risk to
the marine and environment and coastline from this mining proposal? It seems
strange that the NZ Government would be allowing a mine to be established,
in part, in a national park, at least.
