Hi All,
have been following this post with interest. I have been asked to go back
inside, and not roam around outside the Melbourne Airport with binoculars and
camera (looking for Purple-crowned Lorikeets).
However, as for being up-front with the Locals first (especially in country
areas), we have generally found this to be well received. Sometimes, people
are a little suspicious at first, but once they realise you are only
bird-watching, we've found most landholders only too happy to let you onto
their property - and often start to regale you with their own bird stories.
You don't NEED to ask if you stay on public property, but even there, it
doesn't hurt. Certainly, I wouldn't venture onto private property without
first making at least SOME attempt to seek permission.
